Tsvetan Todorov was a Bulgarian philosopher, specializing in literary theory, came up with the theory in which most movies are based around. I am speaking of the theory of Equilibrium, this is the idea that every story, be it novel or film, has a formula in which the story will start with a sense of equilibrium, where everything is calm and constant. This is then broken or brought to a "Disequilibrium" when a problem arises and things are no longer constant, this will bring about a chain of events untill it comes to a resolution which brings about a new equilibrium which is not necessarily the same or as calm and constant as the original. An example of Todorovs theory is "House on Haunted Hill" Dir. William Malone 1999. The original equilibrium begins with an interview at a theme park with a millionaire all is well untill the audience realise that the invitations for the mansion are being supernaturally changed, typing and sending themselves. The disequilibrium is completely disrupted when they realise that the house is haunted, a new equilibrium is met when they escape the house and find the cheques for $1000000. Modern horror and thriller films are using this method more often because it leaves room for a sequal, should the film be very successful.
Our movie will follow the latter of the two because it has become the norm and always has a surprise at the end, our film will follow this theory in a way aswell. Our starting equilibrium begins after a scene in a chemistry class and lasts for a while because our protagonist is happy in a relationship and ready for a promotion but needs a mental health check with a psychiatrist. the disequilibrium comes about when she realises that things are not right and she starts seeing and hearing unusual things, the new equilibrium is brought about when she faces her guilt and gets rid of whats bothering her, and she returns home to her husband. This is going to challenge this theory because the last scene of the movie is going to be a long embracing hug when the husband sees the same manifestation, the audience will then see a quick flash of the chemistry class and it shows that he is the man who tripped up the boy in the first place.
